ROG Ally X: How to Look After the Battery

Battery longevity is driven by heat and time spent at extremes of charge, not by how often you plug in.

Last revised

Why this matters

Lithium cells age chemically. The rate of that ageing roughly doubles for every ten degrees Celsius of sustained temperature increase, and sitting at a full charge accelerates it further.

What you will need

  • The manufacturer charger or a reputable equivalent
  • Somewhere cool to charge
  • Optionally, a charge-limit setting if the device offers one

Step by step

  1. Enable any optimised or adaptive charging option the device provides.
  2. If a charge limit of 80 or 90 percent is offered, use it unless you regularly need full capacity.
  3. Remove thick cases while fast charging, which traps heat against the cell.
  4. Avoid charging in direct sunlight or a hot car.
  5. Check the reported battery health figure every few months and note the trend rather than the absolute number.

How often

These are habits rather than tasks. Check battery health quarterly.

Specific to the ROG Ally X

Bear in mind that windows on a handheld is still a poor fit, which is worth factoring into how carefully you approach this.

Before you start

  • Set aside enough time to finish — a job abandoned halfway is worse than one never started
  • Work somewhere well lit and uncluttered, with a container for anything that comes off the device
  • Take a photograph before you change anything, which costs seconds and saves guessing later
  • Check whether the Asus warranty still applies, because it changes which steps are worth doing yourself

How long it takes

Budget ten minutes the first time and half that afterwards. It is the kind of job that takes longer to schedule than to do, which is exactly why it gets skipped — put it on the same recurring reminder as something else you already do.

Signs you have left it too long

  • It takes noticeably longer to do something that used to be instant, and a restart only fixes it briefly
  • It runs warmer than it did under the same load, in the same room, at the same time of year
  • The behaviour you already know about — windows on a handheld is still a poor fit — starts showing up earlier in the day than it used to
  • You have begun working around it without deciding to, which is usually the first real symptom

What not to do

  • Leaving it at 100 percent in a hot environment for long periods
  • Running to zero regularly, which stresses the cell
  • Cheap unbranded chargers with no protection circuitry
  • Third-party battery replacements of unknown origin

Where this page sits in the reference library.

This reference page is written from the same testing notes as the reviews it supports, and it is revised whenever the hardware or the software underneath it changes. Where a figure appears here it has been measured rather than quoted from a specification sheet.

If something on this page no longer matches what you are seeing, it is out of date rather than disputed — tell us and it gets checked again.

The reviews this page supports go into the measurements behind these figures, and the knowledge base collects every reference page we keep.

Ten minutes the first time, around five once you know the steps.
Nothing described here will. Anything requiring the case to be opened would, so stop there and contact Asus.
Nothing immediately, which is what makes it easy to skip. The cost shows up as a gradual decline you only notice by comparison with a device that has been maintained.
